40% = just over 10 million hectares of trees. 

8 million hectares – or nearly 80% of New Zealand's forests are native forests, or what we call indigenous forests.

2.1 million hectares are plantation forests. Most of these are planted for their wood and other products, but a small number are in reserves or helping to protect our rivers and other parts of the environment.
